Safety

Keeping the teacher in the room while making safety easier to follow.

Workshop Safety helps vocational engineering students get ready before they walk into a workshop for the first time. My part was the video layer: toolbox talks, PPE instructions and safe-disposal videos, with a focus on students who speak English as a second language.

Use AI to extend the teacher’s reach, not to replace the teacher.

The decision that shaped it

Students get the safety instructions in three languages, English, Hindi and Traditional Chinese, and in every version they hear the voice of Phillip Morris, the teacher they already know.

His voice was cloned in ElevenLabs and used for all three language versions. It was left sounding like him, rather than fully native in each language, on purpose. The message was meant to feel personal: this is Phillip going out of his way for his students, not Phillip pretending to speak another language.

A custom video player lets students switch language without leaving the activity, so the explanation stays in one place instead of scattered links.

Response

It was well received. Students were more comfortable following safety information in a language they understood, and the language switching felt inclusive rather than remedial. Phillip saw students were better prepared, and noticed the AI versions made him seem more approachable.

Impact

Students get safety information before they reach the equipment. Language is less of a barrier to understanding it. The teacher stays at the centre of the message, and the same model can be reused for future equipment and groups. Phillip and the team are presenting the project at the end-of-year Learning and Teaching showcase.
